TTOC Sports Personality of the Year award as well as the prestigious “Sportsman of the Year Award” at the First Citizens Annual Award Ceremony. This was no doubt because of his nine- medal haul at the FINA Mastbank World Cup Swimming series and his capture of another gold medal in the 5. Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games held in Mexico soon after, a medal that saw him complete a hat- trick of 5. The year 2. 01. 5 saw even more success follow, as he captured two silver medals in May’s Belgian Open Swimming Championships held in Antwerp, Belgium. In the first of those two events, the Men’s 5. Born in Canada, George Bovell III grew up in Malabar, Arima, East Trinidad where, as a youngster, George’s mother introduced him to his grandmother’s swimming pool. His father, George Bovell II, was a collegiate swimmer and his mother, Barbara, an Olympic runner for Barbados and Canada. George has two siblings, his younger brother Nicholas and sister Alexandra Nicole. Coming from an athletic tradition, George’s early efforts were supported by his family – Bovell began swimming competitively at age seven, taking his first lessons in his grandmother’s pool. Growing up, young George attended St Andrews Primary, Fatima College, and Maple Leaf schools in Port- of- Spain. George trained with national T& T swim clubs and was affiliated with Marlins Swim Club, Flying Fish, and eventually the Piranha Aquatics Swim Club. George remembers his first race at home in which he finished eighth out of eight competitors. This did not deter him, but instead proved to be a challenge. He stuck to his training schedule and his tenacity paid off. By age fourteen he was breaking national records and by sixteen Caribbean regional records began to fall. George never shunned the additional work required to build his stamina. In one national swim meet, he swam in all thirteen events, heats and finals, testifying to his versatility in the pool. His early coaches, Hayden Newallo and Ed Tubaroso, realised that they had someone extremely talented and dedicated in their midst; both did their utmost to hone his technique and skills, working with the tireless swimmer as many as ten to eleven sessions per week.
